Description
This medal is my visual interpretation of the epic Grateful Dead song Dark Star. 1st verse. Bronze, 63mm.
Dark Star crashes, pouring its light into ashes
Reason tatters, the forces pull loose from the axis
Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion
Shall we go, you and I while we can,
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?
High on my list of medals to craft. Worked on this one during early Covid closure. ”Shall we go you and I while we can”, is always an unspoken look of understanding Cathy and I have when we’re considering a large life decision or epic trip. Reflecting on all the highlights of our lives and the magnitude of them now that pandemic travel and gatherings are mostly nonexistent. I wanted the figures on the back to look like luminous beings, like when Yoda tells Luke, “luminous beings we are not this crude matter”. I always believed in that. Maybe someday I will do the second verse of the song.
I’ve included three casting process photos. The green wax model is hand carved and pressed into a specific casting sand then removed creating the casting cavity. Furnace melts brass at 2000 degrees and is pouring from a flask into the mold, hot! Once cooled, the medal is broken from the sand mold and born into the world to exist forever. Raw casting needs flow chanel’s removed, sanded and final finish applied. I’m very interested in this process and continue to perfect may hand at this ancient art. It’s an awesome counterpart to my tattoo endeavors.
Thank you for looking, Matt Thrash
